Wohoo…I’ve got some exciting news to share with you today! I’ve just found out that Sony Playstation will actually be launching their very own branded 3D TV by November 2011 and it’s going to bring a whole new meaning to four wheeler games with regards to how gamers will be playing. More details about the release date and pricing as below..

What sets Sony Playstation’s 3D TV apart from all others in the market is the use of Stereoscopic 3D by using two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. You can read more about this here, which has more details published to date: Motion Based vs 3D: What To Expect From Four Wheeler Games.

Sadly, the 3D TV to be launched in November 2011 (Word is the exact release date should be 3rd Nov 2011) will only be available in 32″.  What I found confusing just looking at Sony’s official site, the playstation 3D display was actually unveiled in the recent E3 event featuring a 24″ LCD screen with full HD 1080 pixels and yet now they’re saying it’ll be 32″. Anyway, this minor detail is just too small a setback considering what it offers gamers.

Come November, if you love multiplayer four wheeler games and are into 3D gaming,  Sony’s SimulView technology will offer full screen gaming on a single TV! Surprisingly, this is going to be the first time I’ve heard about multi player full screen gaming and I suspect the only one in the market currently. Specially enhanced for gaming, the concept is that two individual full HD screen will be available to each player in two player mode. The two images are in full screen 2D but 3D technology is used to separate the image into two distinct 2D views. Now there will never be a need to be playing four wheeler games on a split screen.

Digging deeper, this 3D TV also features Active 3D instead of passive 3D. Wondering what’s the difference? It’s being claimed that by using active technology, the 3D resolution is higher with full HD 3D (full HD 1080p 3D playback), meaning better picture quality compared to passive, which only offers half the resolution (eg if playback is 1080p, you will see only 540 lines of resolution). Even the 3D glasses are different between active and passive 3D displays.

Other details about the Playstation 3D TV if you’re interested to know more:

  • 2 HDMI and 1 component HD inputs deliver HD media from your PS3™ system, cable TV box, and PC
  • Full HD 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080)
  • Edge LED technology offers brilliant contrast, an ultra-slim design and greater energy efficiency
  • 240 Hz refresh rate for ultra-smooth play

NOTE: It does not have an internal TV tuner or antenna and does not support wall mounting.

What about the Playstation 3D glasses? Here’s the full monty:

  • Better wide angle viewing
  • Active equipment (meaning better full HD quality) and thus will support other Active 3D TVs as well.
  • Built in USB rechargeable batteries. 3 minutes of charge will give you approximately 3 hours of intense gaming, while 30 minutes will give you about 30 hours.
  • Minimized crosstalk and ghosting.
  • Supports SumulView technology.

Games wise, at the time of writing this, below is a list of four wheeler games that can be played on this TV:

  • MotorStorm Apocalypse
  • Gran Turismo 5

Of course other non racing games available are…

  • Killzone 3
  • Super Stardust

An updated list of games can be found here:
PS3 3D Games

Retail price for the 3D TV will be USD $499 though I’m not too sure whether there’ll be any 3D TV pre order. Anyway, if you do decide to buy the playsation 3D TV, the out of the box bundle availability should more than satisfy any gamer. You will get one pair of PlayStation® 3D Glasses, MotorStorm: Apocalypse Game, HDMI cable, and integrated 3D sync transmitter built into the display, all you need to do is hook up your PS3™system and you’re ready to go.

So, will you be adding this to your latest Christmas wish list?

Well, it’s been quite a while since I’ve been playing any four wheeler games due to my day job, which makes the recent discovery of a free Spec 2.0 update and a new paid DLC much more surprising. Anyway, for those who’ve already downloaded the new content, I think we can agree that GT5 thrives as still being one of THE best racing games as the downloadable content does  no devalue the pre-existing content.

Mark your calenders, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls.. October 18th, 2011 shall see a series of paid download packs in different price ranges as following:

  • $1.99 Paint Pack - 100 new colors for your race cars.
  • $2.99 Racing Gear Pack - New helmets, racing suits, 12 NASCAR and WRC drivers. (90 Items)
  • $4.99 Course Pack – A new karting track alongside the new Circuit de SPA-Francorchamps. (2 Courses/5 Layouts)

Gran Turismo 5 – New Four Wheeler Games Content Update

One reason why I love using Wikipedia together with my four wheeler games site is the fact that it provides a huge database of historical data for any company or person one could possible think of. The latest digging I’ve been doing is with reference to the “latest” (Been a while since I last posted on this site, so apologies in advance..) news we gamers have been hearing about Codemasters.

If you’ve been around the four wheeler games market for a long time, you’d already be familiar with Codemasters and the games they’ve produced thus far. A British company founded by Richard and David Darling in 1986, it’s one of the oldest British game studios around. Some of the past four wheeler games released by them were TOCA Touring Car, Colin McRae, F1 2009, F1 2010 and the more recent release, Dirt.

Now sadly, it looks like they will be the latest casualty in the long line of developers who have been closing their developer studios either partially or fully. With recent rumors that Codemasters Guildford were called to a company meeting and told that the company was proposing to close down it’s operations.

Interestingly, the reason provided by the company was that it was a decision to focus more on their core four wheeler games racing titles and stopping operations on action and strategy titles. At the same time, Codemasters will be expanding their Birmingham studio to develop a new racing IP.

The year 2011 has for seen three gaming developers closing shop in one way or another, Black Rock Studios, Bizarre Creations and now Codemasters.

Now it’s become an undeniable fact that racing games will be the main gaming theme for the following years to come…yeay!
